The first volume was published in 1837, a second volume in 1842. The stories in the “Twice-Told Tales” series had all been previously published in magazines and annuals, hence the name. Many of these stories have the tone of fables or allegories, ranging from light-hearted to dark and sinister, with touches of the supernatural to add some chills. In these sketches and tales, Hawthorne shows us scenes of New England in colonial times, and in the nineteenth century, written in wonderfully descriptive prose.
